Collection: RNP x RL Foils
RNP x RL shares a love of line, shape, materials, color, and light. When these elements are brought together, it blends into something special. Ryan and I push, learn and influence each other in the best way possible. Our relationship typifies the water cooler effect. Our casual conversations lead to new frontiers we would not explore on our own. Utilizing reclaimed remnants from the studio, we handcrafted unique sculptures of balance and beauty.
Collectively Ryan and myself have been featured in Los Angeles Times, Architectural Digest, Art Ltd., Vogue Magazine, Outside Magazine, SURFER Magazine, on NPR, Conde-Naste Traveler, Red Bull, W Magazine, Santa Monica Museum of Art, and The Kimball Art Center among others both nationally and internationally.
Originally, from Alaska, I have studied color my whole life. It is the universal language that can translate and communicate thoughts into visceral and immediate moments. My art practice has been built upon taking ideas and concepts – often considered too wild, rough or opposed – and crafting them into artifacts that are both modern and timeless. I enhance and abstract forms by the action of painting and sculpting: totems, cairns, flags and flitches are all united by color, making ephemeral ideas tactile and tangible. Utilizing the vocabulary of Color and Light, my aim is to seize the essence of a definitive sublime experience; those moments that are both raw and refined often triggered by nature, and portray its emotional narrative for the audience. As an acknowledgment of the world by which we are inspired, I uphold a mission of sustainability and zero-waste in my studio practice. Even in the discarded there is gold.
When I turned 19 I started building my own surfboards because I couldn't afford the ones I wanted. As time went on, I saw what would have been a ridiculous notion becoming a possibility; as the few that I made became well-received by the few people that I shared them with, I started to realize this could be a real thing for me as I defined my life for myself. I figured I better follow through with this because if it worked, it would be the biggest stroke of luck - and if not, at least I tried.
"Ryan’s contribution to the world of surfboard shaping started with a desire to shape boards more than a desire to join a specific movement. And, yet, he now sits strongly in the middle of alternative surf culture. With his shaping room only blocks from the Pacific Ocean, Ryan’s designs are innovative and experimental yet remain well constructed and fun to surf. He opts for hand tools and patience, taking the time to shape truly one of a kind surfboards.
Ryan is part of an emerging young group of passionate creative who are restoring a sense of culture and community in the Santa Barbara area. Like other millennials, he is combing the past for tools, imagery, and spirit, merging old methods with new, paying homage to the forefathers before him. Through making, he is bringing back a sense of real quality in his handmade surfboards." -Daniel Katz
